Church and Convent of Saint Catherine – Palermo
Among the three churches on Piazza Bellini, located in Palermo’s historic center, it is the Baroque Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria that stands out as the most impressive. Built at the end of the 16th century, it was once part of a Dominican convent that housed cloistered nuns. Today, this site, long closed to the public, is open for visits.
The monastery and its cloister are some of the most charming places to explore in Palermo, offering a gentle and serene atmosphere. Visitors can admire numerous frescoes and cement tiles beautifully aged by time. The monastery’s panoramic balcony offers a fantastic view over the city as well as the Martorana and San Cataldo churches, the other two on Piazza Bellini.
At the end of your visit, it is highly recommended to treat yourself to a sweet delight at the Sicilian pastry workshop I Segreti del Chiostro, located in one wing of the Saint Catherine monastery. This cultural project aims to highlight and revive traditional Sicilian pastries. Here, you will find an incredible selection of classic treats: cannoli, cassata siciliana, sussameli, maria struada, and more.
